The blog archives (2005–2010)

From 2005 to 2010, blog.narnia.ch followed Narnia’s arrival in the cinema, day by day. More than 500 articles, podcasts, a forum, a gallery: here is what the site was, what we have kept of it, and why.

The attic of memories

Un vieux bureau sous les toits, où dort la mémoire du blog
  • 507 articles in French between April 2005 and April 2010, 375 of them in 2005.
  • A team of volunteers from French-speaking Switzerland, around Philippe Kiener.
  • The in-depth pieces are carried over unchanged; film news and readers’ contributions are not.

A blog born with the film

In April 2005, Disney and Walden Media were preparing the adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The film was due for release in December. Philippe Kiener then opened blog.narnia.ch, a site in French to follow the production and to introduce C.S. Lewis’s world to French-speaking readers. The first article is dated 25 April 2005.

Very soon a small team formed in French-speaking Switzerland: Yann Petter, Steve Tanner, Marc Varidel, Christophe Maffini, Raphaël Noir, Sophie Gertsch and Esaïe Bergier joined the adventure. The “Who are we?” page of August 2005, reproduced below, introduces the team with the roles announced at the time; we do not know today how the tasks were actually shared out afterwards. The site was hosted by Artszone, an arts collective in French-speaking Switzerland.

The pace of a cinema year

2005 was the year of the rush: 375 articles in eight months, often several a day. The blog passed on the trailers, the posters, the interviews, the box-office figures and the merchandise releases. But it also offered, every week from September to November, an in-depth series, “Set out to discover”, on Lewis, Tolkien, the characters, the creatures and the meaning of the Chronicles.

  • Year — Articles
  • 2005 — 375
  • 2006 — 108
  • 2007 — 6
  • 2008 — 0
  • 2009 — 1
  • 2010 — 2

After the film’s release, the pace slowed. In 2006 there was talk of the Oscar for Best Make-up, the DVD, the first steps of Prince Caspian and Douglas Gresham’s lecture tour in French-speaking Switzerland, from 21 to 25 October 2006. In 2007 the last articles announced the cast and the filming of the second film. The three messages of 2009 and 2010 passed on initiatives with no direct link to Narnia (Christmas differently, a Lent campaign, a day devoted to water).

A few dates

  • 25 April 2005: first article.
  • September to November 2005: weekly series “Set out to discover”.
  • 17 October 2005: first podcast, “Narnia, Enter the Wardrobe”.
  • 19 to 23 December 2005: a week of programmes about Narnia on Espace 2, in which Philippe Kiener took part.
  • 21 December 2005: the film opens in French-speaking Switzerland and in France (in German-speaking Switzerland, from 7 December).
  • 25 February 2006: fourth and last podcast, devoted to Lewis’s work.
  • March 2006: the film receives the Oscar for Best Make-up.
  • October 2006: Douglas Gresham’s tour of French-speaking Switzerland.
  • February–April 2007: last articles on the filming of Prince Caspian.
  • 10 April 2010: last article.

What the site contained

  • 507 articles in French and 8 in German.
  • 31 “thoughts for the day”, quotations with commentary.
  • 406 comments from readers.
  • A photo gallery of 70 albums, which referenced about 2,000 images, mostly promotional photographs of the film.
  • A forum and a wiki open to readers.
  • Four podcasts, competitions, virtual cards, a poll and a small online bookshop.

The sections reflected the priority given to the first film: more than 380 articles were about it, against about twenty for Prince Caspian, about twenty for the “Exploration” section (the in-depth pieces), about twenty for C.S. Lewis and a dozen for the blog itself.

What we carried over

The site has been offline since 2010. A copy was recovered in October 2026 from the web archives (Wayback Machine). For this new version, we made some choices:

  • The in-depth pieces by Philippe Kiener and the site’s other authors (Marc Varidel, Steve Tanner, René Gfeller and others) are carried over unchanged, with their author and their date, at the foot of the thematic articles. The factual errors of the time have been corrected in them; each correction is recorded with the original text.
  • The news articles (trailers, box office, casting rumours) are not republished one by one. Their content is summarised on the pages devoted to the films.
  • The comments, the forum, the readers’ reviews and the wiki are not republished: they are contributions from readers, and we will not carry them over without their agreement.
  • The film photographs from the gallery are not carried over, for reasons of rights. The illustrations on the new site are all original.
  • The podcasts could not be recovered: the audio files were not archived.

The correspondence table between the old articles and the new pages is given in the data for this page.

Thank you

Thank you to the whole team of 2005, to the guest authors, and to the thousands of readers who brought the site to life. Narnia returns to the cinema in 2027, with Greta Gerwig’s film: in IMAX cinemas on 12 February, then on Netflix from 2 April (in France, on Netflix only). The blog is back in service.
