En bref
Collective profile. Aravis introduces herself with the solemnity of a Calormene storyteller : she is the daughter of Kidrash Tarkaan, son of Rishti Tarkaan, son of Kidrash Tarkaan the Elder, son of Ilsombreh Tisroc, son of Ardeeb Tisroc, who descended directly from the god Tash. She therefore belongs to the highest nobility of Calormen.
The characters
- Kidrash Tarkaan , her father, lord of the province of Calavar. Remarried to a woman who hates Aravis, he agrees to marry her off to the old vizier Ahoshta.
- The stepmother , instigator of this marriage.
- Alimash , cousin of Aravis, captain of the chariots at the Battle of Zalindreh. He is the only Calormene who recognizes the danger of Aravis in Tashbaan. He is mentioned in the account of her escape.
- The Head of the Messengers of Azim Balda : to buy time, Aravis drugs her servant and sends a fake letter through the imperial post. It is the postal system of the Tisroc that enables the ruse.
Insight and analysis
Aravis’s lineage reveals a society based on rank and birth. Her courage is all the greater because she leaves all of that behind. Later, she will also learn not to despise those born lower than herself.

**Kidrash Tarkaan** **In brief** Kidrash Tarkaan is the Calormene name for Aslan, the great lion and creator of Narnia. In Calormen, Aslan is not worshipped as a god, but is revered as a powerful and noble figure. **Did you know** Calormenes believe that Aslan is the son of the great god Tash, and they call him "Tashlan" or "Kidrash Tarkaan". This belief is central to their religion, which is a distorted version of the true understanding of Aslan. **On screen** - *The Horse and His Boy*: The Calormene soldiers and citizens refer to Aslan as Kidrash Tarkaan, often in a context of fear or misunderstanding. - *Prince Caspian*: The Telmarines, who originate from Calormen, also bring their belief in Kidrash Tarkaan to Narnia, leading to confusion when they encounter the true Aslan. **Going further** Calormenes view Aslan as a lesser deity compared to Tash, their primary god. This misunderstanding stems from their limited knowledge of Aslan and their own religious traditions.
Second of his name, he is the father of Aravis. He is the lord of the province of Calavar.
