The Calormenes have brown skin and wear turbans, long robes, and scimitars. Their society is highly hierarchical : the Tisroc rules as absolute sovereign, the Tarkaans and Tarkheenas form the nobility, and slaves are numerous. They enjoy fine words, proverbs, and long tales ; Aravis tells her story in this style. They worship Tash, Azaroth, and Zardeenah. Lewis also portrays admirable Calormenes : Aravis, Emeth. The depiction of this people, inspired by a fairy-tale Orient, is today debated for its stereotypes.
Their civilization is rich and refined, but it is slave-driven and devoted to the worship of Tash. They speak in proverbs and revere poetry. Their nobles wear turbans and mail armor.
