The register of characters

A hundred and twenty-one entries, and a way to find your way among them: meet the characters of Narnia by families of stories rather than in alphabetical order.

The great assembly

Des héros de tous les livres réunis sur une colline au crépuscule

More than a hundred and twenty characters have an entry on this site. Rather than lining them up from A to Z, we invite you to meet them by families of stories: those who come from our world, those who change, those who reign, those who remain faithful, those who deceive, and those who pass beyond human measure. One and the same character may appear in several families: Edmund is at once a child of London, a forgiven traitor and a king.

The full list is further down, book by book and then from A to Z, and also in the A to Z index.

Each entry begins with a spoiler-free portrait; the character's full story follows. For the peoples (fauns, dwarfs, centaurs…), see Peoples and creatures.

From our world

Eleven English people one day cross the frontier: children, for the most part, but also a vain magician and a cabby who will become a king. Through them, the reader enters Narnia as one pushes open a door.

Those who change along the way

In Lewis, one does not remain as one was on entering the story. The traitor becomes a king, the odious boy becomes a dragon and then a friend, the vain horse learns humility, and the loyal enemy discovers that he was serving Aslan without knowing it.

Those who wear a crown

From Frank I to Tirian, Narnia and its neighbours have known just sovereigns, usurpers and forgotten kings. For the succession of reigns, see our royal lines.

The whole succession, with the tree of the dynasties: Crowns and lineages.

The faithful of Narnia

A faun who repents, a badger who forgets nothing, a mouse braver than ten knights, a gloomy but unshakeable Marsh-wiggle: loyalty has a thousand faces in Narnia.

The faces of evil and falsehood

Two witches, usurpers, a smooth-talking ape and a cat too clever by half: those who betray Narnia rarely do so by force alone. They lie first.

Larger than life

Some characters are neither human nor beast: a lion who sings the world, a star at rest, a sleeping giant who waits for the end of time, a cruel god come from Calormen.

Those who reappear from book to book

The Chronicles of Narnia do not follow a single hero. Only a few characters appear in at least three books (mere mentions aside).
