The crew of the *Dawn Treader* (Rhince, Rynelf, Dufflepud…)

The characters

• Rhince , the second-in-command : a sturdy sailor of modest background, blunt in speech. He grows impatient with Eustace but apologizes when Reepicheep corrects him. He remains loyal even when the crew hesitates to continue eastward.
• Rynelf  : an old servant of the king, a skilled sailor. He dares to speak bluntly to Caspian when the latter wants to abdicate to follow Reepicheep.
• Crème-grêlée (Pittencream), sailor from Galma : on Ramandu’s Island, he is the last to ask to continue the voyage, fearing to be left alone. Caspian refuses, and he stays on the island with the sleeping lords. Back in Narnia, he settles in Calormen, where he tells invented stories about the voyage to anyone who will listen, eventually believing them himself.
• Nancy and Tom : acquaintances mentioned by sailors during the voyage, a fiancée and a lost friend.

View and analysis

The crew embodies the temptation to give up when faced with the unknown. Lewis shows with humor and subtlety how the men, who had wanted to stop, change their minds as soon as they are told that not all will be allowed to continue : the voyage then becomes a point of honor.
