En bref
The Hermit lives alone in a green enclosure at the foot of the Archenland mountains, at the edge of the desert. He is 109 years old, walks barefoot, wears a robe the color of autumn leaves and a beard that reaches his knees. He has a still pool of water in which he can see what is happening far away.
Insight and analysis
The Hermit is a figure of contemplative wisdom, akin to the hermits in Arthurian novels and the Desert Fathers. His refusal of "luck" expresses the idea of Providence dear to Lewis : behind the random events of the journey, there is a guiding hand. The pool also recalls the magic mirrors of fairy tales, but in the service of peace.

In the book
Pursued by a lion, Aravis, Bree, and Hwin arrive at his door. He welcomes them without surprise, tends to Aravis’s scratches, feeds the horses and offers them rest. Meanwhile, he observes the battle of Anvard in his pool and comments on it for them. When Aravis asks him if he has been lucky, he replies that in one hundred and nine years he has never met with luck. To him, what happens has meaning.
