En bref

Arsheesh lives in a hut by the sea in southern Calormen. He fishes, sells his catch in the village, and works Shasta hard from morning till night. He is not a monster, but he does not like the boy and shows him no tenderness.

View and analysis

Arsheesh opens the book like a figure of hardship that hardens hearts. The beached boat echoes with Moses saved from the waters and other abandoned heroes (Oedipus, Perseus) : a royal child raised by strangers, who will discover who he truly is.

In the book

One evening, the Tarkaan Anradin asks for hospitality and offers to buy Shasta. Hidden, the boy hears Arsheesh admit that he found Shasta as a baby in a beached boat, along with a starving man. Since Shasta is not his son, Arsheesh has no qualms about selling him. Relieved to not be the son of this cruel man, Shasta flees that very night with Bree.
