En bref
Emeth is a young officer from Calormen, the seventh son of Harpha Tarkaan, from the city of Tehishbaan. He has always served Tash with all his heart. He came to Narnia with Rishda’s troops, disguised as a merchant, which he finds dishonourable. Gradually, he discovers that his leaders do not believe in what they say.
« My son, all the service you have done to Tash, I account as service done to me. »
Child, all the service you have done to Aslan, I account as service done to me.
— Aslan to Emeth (Emeth’s account), The Last Battle, ch. 15
Name
Emeth means "truth" or "faithfulness" in Hebrew. The name summarises the character.
Look and analysis
The scene with Emeth is one of the most commented passages in Lewis. It expresses the idea, also present in Mere Christianity, that some may belong to Christ without knowing him by name. For some, it is a beautiful opening ; others see it as a tension with certain Christian doctrines. The site presents this discussion without taking a definitive stance. Literarily, Emeth is also proof that Lewis does not reduce the Calormenes to mere villains : the one who enters the land of Aslan is the most sincere among them.

The story
When Shift announces that "Tashlan" is waiting in the stable, Emeth asks to enter to see his god, at the risk of his life. Rishda tries to dissuade him in vain. Once inside, he kills the soldier posted to kill the curious. He discovers a radiant land, and there he meets Aslan. Terrified, he expects to be rejected, since he has served Tash all his life. Aslan tells him that all sincere and good service rendered to Tash returns to him, for there is nothing in common between them. Emeth, he says, has sought him without knowing it : one does not seek in vain when one truly seeks. Emeth then tells this to the heroes, amazed.
