En bref
Lasaraleen is a young Tarkheena, that is, a lady of the Calormene nobility. Childhood friend of Aravis, she has been married very young to a wealthy lord and lives in Tashbaan in luxury. She loves parties, dresses, gossip, and the court.
Insight and analysis
Lasaraleen is not evil : she is superficial and trapped in her own world. She allows Lewis to show, by contrast, Aravis’s courage, as she gives up this luxury for freedom. She also represents the weight of conventions in a society where girls are married off for gain.
Dans les livres
Son histoire dans les livres (révèle l’intrigue)
In the book
She recognizes Aravis, disguised as a slave, in the streets of the capital. She hides her in her house and listens to her story of escape. She does not understand how one could refuse a marriage to Ahoshta, the new Grand Vizier. She agrees to help her anyway and guides her through the Old Palace to a water door, through which Aravis reaches the tombs. Along the way, the two girls overhear the Tisroc’s secret council. Lasaraleen, terrified, nearly ruins everything.
