The ivy-covered class

En bref

Gwendoline is a little girl from Beruna, a pupil at a school where they teach a boring and false history. During class, she sees a lion at the window.

Look and analysis

Gwendoline represents childhood recognizing what adults refuse to see. The scene echoes the Gospel verse about those who receive the Kingdom like children, and Lewis’s critique of a school that stifles imagination.

The story

The teacher, Miss Pricket, scolds her for talking nonsense. Aslan’s roar transforms the classroom into a clearing. The teacher and most of the pupils flee. Gwendoline, however, stays, accepts the outstretched hand, and joins the celebration. The Marshwiggles help her remove the unnecessary and stiff clothes of the uniform.
