The stories of the nurse

En bref

When Caspian was young, his nurse told him stories he wasn’t allowed to tell : talking beasts, dryads, the old kings and queens, and Aslan. Caspian made the mistake of mentioning these to his uncle, and Miraz banished him.

Look and analysis

The nurse illustrates a theme dear to Lewis : stories can convey truths that official history hides. Her reward shows that the faithfulness of the little ones does not go unnoticed.

In the book

At the end of Prince Caspian, the Festival of Aslan moves through the countryside. The lion enters a small house where an old woman is dying and restores her to health : it is the nurse. She declares that she always knew everything was true. She rides on Aslan’s back to join the festival and is reunited with Caspian.

Nanny

She is not mentioned by name in the book. However, she plays an important role. She awakens Prince Caspian’s spirit to the Old Time when such practices were forbidden by the King. She then enabled a true awakening in the land through the person of Prince Caspian. She was banished by the King because of the stories she told to the prince. In her old age, she was forced to live in Beruna and was in very poor health. But she was healed and saved by Aslan. C.S. Lewis was inspired by his nurse, Lizzie Endicott, for this character.

Quote

* *- Oh ! Aslan, I knew it was true ! I have waited for this moment all my life ! Have you come to take me away with you ? (said the old woman)

- Yes, my dear, said Aslan. But it is not yet the great journey. Page 215*
