Le lieu
Beruna is a small town on the banks of the Great River, born under Telmarine rule. The Telmarins built a bridge that "chained" the river. It houses a stern girls’ school run by Miss Prig, where the little Gwendolen is bored.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)
After the victory at the Hill, Aslan, Bacchus, Silenus, and the Maenads parade through the town. The bridge collapses under the action of the River-god, ivy invades the school and the houses, and the inhabitants choose to flee or join the celebration.
This scene depicts liberation in a joyful and wild light : the shackles of a dreary civilization are broken by life.
Beruna was born near the ford where the battle against the White Witch had been fought. Under the Telmarins, it became a town with a stone bridge. The river god, bound by this bridge, demands his freedom. The town has a school where a history without magic is taught.
