En bref

In The Silver Chair, the gnomes show the travelers, in a cavern, a giant larger than all others, with a snowy beard, deeply asleep. They call him the Father Time : once a king in the upper world, he has sunk beneath the earth and dreams of what happens above. It is said he will wake at the end of the world.

Look and analysis

Lewis gives a mythological form to time itself. The giant is not evil : he is the natural end of things, under Aslan’s authority. Indeed, when he wakes, he becomes something else.

In the books

The prophecy is fulfilled in The Last Battle. Aslan calls Time. The giant rises and blows his horn. The stars fall, the creatures of Narnia rush to the stable door, and then the giant crushes the dying red sun in his hand. Narnia ends.
