En bref

Group profile. Experiment House, the mixed school of Eustace and Jill, is run by a headmistress who believes in letting children do as they please. Result : a gang of older pupils terrorizes the others with impunity. The headmistress sees the bullies as “interesting psychological cases.”

Names mentioned

  • Adela Pennyfather , Cholmondely Major, Edith Winterblott, Eleanor Blakiston, Carter, Bannister, Sorner, the Garrett twins, Edith Jackle : members of the gang or unpleasant pupils. Edith Jackle is the girl who spies on Jill at the beginning of the book.
  • Spivvins  : a pupil mentioned at the beginning of The Silver Chair. Eustace refuses to denounce him.
  • Anne Featherstone and Marjorie Preston : in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, they are Lucy’s classmates. Thanks to a spell in the magician’s book, Lucy hears them badmouthing her.

Perspective and analysis

Lewis attacks the “progressive” pedagogy he considered irresponsible. The satire is biting ; it shows that injustice is not always a matter of evil people, but also of negligence.

In the books

At the end of The Silver Chair, Aslan, resurrected Caspian, Jill and Eustace punish the gang. The headmistress, in a panic, is sacked, then becomes an inspector, then a Member of Parliament. The school is finally well run. In The Last Battle, we learn that Jill and Eustace are still at the school.
