En bref
Fiche collective. Digory and Polly live in Cambridge. The narrator describes them ironically : they are very modern and progressive. They don’t smoke, don’t drink, are vegetarians, wear special underwear, have few pieces of furniture, keep all the windows open, and their son is called by his first name.
Regard and analysis
Lewis mocks a kind of modernism he considered stifling. Today’s readers may find the satire unfair toward certain ideas (pacifism, vegetarianism) : the page “Narnia in debate” reminds us of this. The heart of the criticism lies in the lack of imagination in Eustace’s education, who “had read only books that were unsuitable.”

In the books
In 1942, they host Edmund and Lucy, whom they don’t much care for. The famous painting of the Dawn Treader hangs in their house : a wedding gift that Alberta dislikes and has relegated to a spare room. It’s through this painting that the children enter Narnia. In The Silver Chair, we learn that they have chosen for Eustace the Experimental House, a co-ed and lax school.
