En bref
Tirian is the last king of Narnia. Young, honest, and vigorous, he loves hunting and lives simply in a wooden pavilion near the Lantern Waste. He shares everything with his best friend, the unicorn Jewel. The land has long been at peace. Then strange news arrives : Aslan is said to have returned, and he orders the Talking Trees to be cut down and the Narnians to be enslaved by the Calormenes.
« Aslan ! Aslan ! Aslan ! Come help us now. »
Aslan! Aslan! Aslan! Come and help us now.
— **Tirian**, *The Last Battle*, ch. 4
Personality
Loyal, impetuous, chivalrous, Tirian also has a strong sense of responsibility. He immediately acknowledges his fault and refuses to lie, even to save his life. He holds firm to the end, without any human hope of victory.
Look and analysis
Tirian embodies courage in defeat : fighting for what is right when all seems lost. His story also raises a troubling question, that of religious deception. The false Aslan and the confusion of “Tashlan” show how faith can be manipulated for power. This is a theme that remains highly relevant.
Relations
- Jewel : his dear friend, the unicorn.
- Erlian : his father, whom he meets young in the land of Aslan.
- Jill and Eustace : sent to his call.
- Roonwit, Roonwit, Puddleglum : his last faithful companions.
Name
Tirian is the last king of Narnia, a descendant of Rilian seven generations removed according to the story (the English wiki counts six generations between Rilian and Erlian).
Symbolism
Tirian is the king of the last days : loyal when all is collapsing, he embodies hope without earthly victory.

The story
The Last Battle
Outraged by the Calormenes mistreating a Talking Horse in Aslan’s name, Tirian and Jewel kill two without thinking. When he realizes he has struck unarmed men, Tirian surrenders himself. Tied to a tree, he sees in the firelight the “false Aslan,” a donkey in a lion skin, presented by the ape Shift. He calls on the real Aslan and in a vision sees the seven friends of Narnia gathered around a table in our world. Soon after, Eustace and Jill appear and free him. With them, Jewel, the dwarf Puddleglum, and a few loyal subjects, Tirian tries to expose the fraud. But many Narnians no longer believe in anything, and the dwarfs declare : “Dwarfs are for dwarfs.” The small band fights a final, desperate battle before the stable. Tirian finally drags the Calormene captain Rishda Tarkaan into the stable, and finds himself in another, bright place. There he meets the kings and queens of old and sees, alongside Aslan, the end of Narnia. Then he enters with them into the true Narnia.

Presentation in the book
*"He liked to live there simply, far from the pomp and splendor of Cair Paravel, the royal city. He was called King Tirian, and he was between twenty and twenty-five years old ; his shoulders were already broad and strong, his limbs powerfully muscled, but his beard still sparse. He had blue eyes and a face that was honest and fearless."* (p. 20)
