En bref
Lucy is the youngest of the Pevensie children and the first to enter the wardrobe. Through her eyes, the reader discovers Narnia : the lamp-post in the snow, the faun Mr. Tumnus, tea and sardines on toast. Frank, affectionate, and very direct, she also possesses a quiet courage that earns her the title of Queen Lucy the Valiant. More than any other character, she is Aslan’s friend.
Lewis dedicated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to his goddaughter Lucy Barfield, daughter of his friend Owen Barfield.
« Each year, as you grow, you’ll find me bigger. »
Every year you grow, you will find me bigger.
— Aslan to Lucy, *Prince Caspian*, ch. 10
Relations
- Aslan : her strongest bond. She is often the only one who can see him (Prince Caspian).
- Mr. Tumnus : her first friend in Narnia, whom she in turn saves.
- Edmund : the brother who mocks her, then becomes her most loyal ally.
- Reepicheep and Caspian : her companions in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Name and translations
Lucy comes from the Latin lux, meaning light. Lewis dedicated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to his goddaughter Lucy Barfield, daughter of his friend Owen Barfield. In English, her title as queen is “Queen Lucy the Valiant”.
Notable quotes (paraphrased)
- In Prince Caspian, Lucy remarks that Aslan seems bigger. He replies that it’s because she has grown : each year, she will find him bigger.
- In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, after reading in the magician’s book a spell to know what her friends think of her, she must learn that one cannot know what might have been.
Symbolism
Lucy embodies spontaneous faith and wonder, the one who believes before she understands. She also has her temptations, such as the desire for beauty in the magician’s book, which prevents her from being a stained-glass saint.
Trivia
- She is the first of the Pevensies to enter Narnia, through the wardrobe.
- Georgie Henley portrayed her in the three films of 2005, 2008, and 2010.

Son histoire dans les livres (révèle l’intrigue)
The story
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
No one believes Lucy when she returns, and Edmund lies to contradict her. The Professor Digory Kirke, however, remarks that she doesn’t usually lie. She receives from Father Christmas a healing cordial and a small dagger. Along with Susan, she keeps watch over Aslan the night of his sacrifice and witnesses his return. After the battle, she tends to the wounded, including Edmund.
The Horse and His Boy
As an adult, she takes part in the defense of Anvard alongside the archers.
Prince Caspian
Lucy sees Aslan first while the others refuse to follow her. She must choose between being right alone and staying with the group. Aslan tells her to go to him even if the others don’t come. This is one of the key scenes in the series.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
On the island of the magician Coriakin, she reads a spellbook. She is tempted by a spell of beauty that would make her more beautiful than Susan, and overhears a conversation not meant for her ears. She emerges humbled and a little wounded. At the end, Aslan tells her she will not return. He says she must learn to know him in her own world, under another name.
The Silver Chair
Lucy enters Aslan’s country with the others. She notices that the stable is bigger on the inside than the outside, and recalls that another stable, in her own world, once held something greater than the whole world.
The Last Battle
Lucy goes into Aslan’s country with the others. She notices that the stable is bigger on the inside than the outside, and recalls that another stable, in her own world, once held something greater than the whole world.

Lucy Pevensie
Lucy is the youngest of the four Pevensie children, born in 1932, and evacuated from their London home during the Blitz to live at Professor Kirke’s house. Though young, she has a strong sense of right and wrong and never tells a lie. Like Susan, she is gentle, and she truly feels sorry for poor Mr Tumnus when he tells her that the White Witch could turn him into stone. But she has great faith in Aslan and owes much to him. She was known as Queen Lucy the Valiant. She died in a railway accident and thus reached the True Narnia.
