En bref
Tash is the chief god of Calormen. The capital, Tashbaan, is named after him ; the Tisrocks and high nobles claim descent from him. His worship requires sacrifices, including human ones. He is depicted with the head of a vulture and four arms.
View and analysis
Tash is the opposite of Aslan. Aslan is a lion, a being of flesh and warmth ; Tash is a shadow that withers the grass. Aslan’s followers love him ; those of Tash fear him. The book also contains an important reflection on salvation : Aslan tells Emeth that all good and true service done to Tash redounds to him, because Tash and he are opposites, and all cruel service done in his name redounds to Tash. This idea has been variously discussed by theologians and readers (see the Emeth sheet).

In the books
- The Horse and His Boy : Tash is mostly invoked. Rabadash must regain human form in his temple.
- The Last Battle : Shift and the Calormenes invent “Tashlan,” a single god who would be both Tash and Aslan. Rishda Tarkaan and the Cat do not believe in either. But by calling him so often, they bring him into being. A grey, icy, and stinking form with a vulture’s head passes through Narnia to the north. Tash enters the stable, seizes Rishda, and is driven out by High King Peter in the name of Aslan.
