Mort on the day of John F. Kennedy's assassination, almost in indifference, Aslan is everywhere today: on screen, on stamps, in an abbey, on a square in Belfast. But his legacy is also disputed. Overview of what is celebrated and what is contested.

The Poets' Corner

L'intérieur gothique d'une abbaye, des pierres commémoratives au sol dans un rai de lumière
Des enfants de dos admirent une statue de bronze d'un lion sur une place urbaine
There is a place in Belfast
  • Shadowlands (1993) and Freud, the Last Session (2023).
  • British stamps in 1998 and 2025, statues in Belfast, stone in Westminster since 2013.
  • Resolute opponents, such as Philip Pullman, and a long feud over posthumous texts.
  • Narnia returns to the cinema in 2027 with Greta Gerwig.

In brief

On screen

  • Shadowlands (BBC, 1985), TV film by Norman Stone with Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom, adapted by William Nicholson, awarded at the BAFTA.
  • Shadowlands (Les Ombres du cœur, 1993), by Richard Attenborough, with Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger: the story of Lewis and Joy, very free (Joy had only one son in the film, two in reality), but moving. See “Joy Davidman and Shadowlands”.
  • The Most Reluctant Convert (2021), film by Norman Stone with Max McLean, based on his play about Lewis’s conversion.
  • Freud’s Last Session (Freud, la dernière confession, 2023), by Matt Brown, with Anthony Hopkins as Freud and Matthew Goode as Lewis: an imagined meeting between the two men in September 1939, based on Mark St. Germain’s play (2009).
  • And Narnia: the BBC series (1988-1990), the three films by Walden Media (2005, 2008, 2010), and The Magician’s Nephew by Greta Gerwig, in cinemas on 12 February 2027 then on Netflix from 2 April 2027 (in France, only on Netflix).

On stage

Max McLean’s plays (The Screwtape, The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis on Stage) have been touring for years in the United States. Shadowlands was also adapted for the stage by William Nicholson (1989).

In stone and bronze

  • Belfast: C.S. Lewis Square (2016), with its seven Narnian sculptures by Maurice Harron, and the statue The Searcher (1998) by Ross Wilson.
  • London: a stone at the Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey, unveiled on 22 November 2013, for the fiftieth anniversary of his death.
  • Oxford: the plaque at Addison’s Walk, the Narnian stained glass window at Holy Trinity Church, The Kilns restored.

On stamps

In 1998, for the centenary of his birth, the Royal Mail dedicated a stamp to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in its “Magical Worlds” series. On 22 May 2025, for the 75th anniversary of Narnia, it issued a series of eight stamps illustrated by Keith Robinson, accompanied by a block featuring drawings by Pauline Baynes.

In institutions

  • The Marion E. Wade Center (Wheaton College, near Chicago), which preserves manuscripts, letters and the family wardrobe.
  • The C.S. Lewis Foundation (California), owner of the Kilns, which welcomes researchers and students.
  • C.S. Lewis societies in many countries, such as those in New York (founded in 1969) or Oxford.
  • The C.S. Lewis Festival in Belfast, every year around his birthday, late November.

Going further

An author worth fighting

His books still sell millions. He is one of the world’s most quoted Christian authors, by Protestants as well as Catholics; scientists such as geneticist Francis Collins, politicians and writers have said they owe their conversion to him. But he also has resolute opponents: Philip Pullman, author of The Dark is Rising, called Narnia religious propaganda and wrote his trilogy partly in response. Neil Gaiman, who loved it as a child, responded with a bitter tale. J.K. Rowling, for her part, said she reread Narnia. Our page “Critiques et controverses” sums up these debates.

Trivia

After Lewis’s death, Walter Hooper, a young American who had been his secretary for a few weeks in 1963, became the tireless editor of his posthumous texts. In the 1970s-1980s, the American Kathryn Lindskoog accused him of exaggerating his role and even forging some texts, including The Black Tower. Most scholars have since rejected the accusation of forgery, while acknowledging that Hooper had embellished his relationship with Lewis. Hooper died in 2020. Lewis’s stepson, Douglas Gresham, long-time guardian of his legacy and co-producer of the Narnia films, has been seriously ill since 2024 according to his family.

In the books

For a long time unknown in France, Lewis has been gaining ground since 2005: new translations, academic conferences (Lille 2011, Amiens 2026), reading groups. The 2027 film, distributed in France only on Netflix, should further expand his audience. See “Lewis côté français: la guerre, les traductions, les lecteurs” and “From Neuchâtel to our bookshops”.
