En bref
Helen is Frank’s wife, the coachman. Lewis never shows her in London ; we discover her at the moment when Aslan calls her to the new world. She was in the middle of washing clothes and arrives with her hands still full of suds, giving the scene a very tangible tenderness.
Regard and analysis
Helen embodies, with Frank, royalty seen as service. The couple calls to mind Adam and Eve in a new garden, but Lewis avoids any grandeur : they are simple people, and it is precisely for that reason that they are suitable. The contrast between her peaceful arrival and the chaotic journeys of the other visitors (rings, the White Witch, a coach accident) emphasizes that Aslan does not need magic to summon those he chooses.

In the books
In The Magician’s Nephew, Aslan summons her directly "like a bird returning to its nest," without a ring or elaborate magic. She is crowned alongside Frank and becomes Narnia’s first queen. The couple have children who found the dynasties of Narnia and, later, Archenland. In The Last Battle, she appears among the former rulers found in Aslan’s country.
