Mabel Kirke is the mother of Digory. She is so ill that she is believed to be lost, and it is her illness that gives The Magician’s Nephew its hidden heart : a boy who wants to save his mother at all costs.

Insight and analysis

Lewis lost his own mother to cancer in 1908, at the age of nine, and Mabel’s room echoes that wound. In the book, the healing is not a bargained reward : it is given to the one who has renounced taking it. This is the exact opposite of the magic of Uncle Andrew.

Digory hopes to find a cure for her in another world. He once tried to steal the apple to heal her. He refused, out of loyalty to Aslan. Aslan then gives him an apple from the tree himself, and Mabel is healed. Digory’s father returns from India, the family inherits a large country house, and the apple core, planted in the garden, grows into the tree whose wood will be used to make the wardrobe.
