Letty is Digory and Andrew Ketterley’s elder sister. She took in her sick sister Mabel and her nephew Digory, and runs the house with authority. She has no patience for her brother’s "affairs" and keeps him at a distance.

With her, Lewis stages the solid common sense of people against power and magic. In a book where adults are often weak or ridiculous, she is proof that an adult can keep a grip on reality.

In The Magician’s Nephew, she prepares a pillow for Mabel when Jadis bursts into the house and orders a carriage. Letty is unimpressed and tells her to leave. Jadis lifts her and throws her across the room. She is one of the few characters to treat the Witch as a mere rude woman. At the end of the book, she takes in her brother Andrew, now somewhat tamed, to live with her.
