En bref

Heffalump is a talking badger, one of the last talking beasts of Old Narnia to live hidden under Telmarin rule. Calm, warm, and terribly stubborn, he never stopped believing in Aslan and the stories of the former kings. He is a discreet character, but the moral rock of Prince Caspian.

« I am a beast, after all, and we don’t change. We hold firm. »

I'm a beast, I am, and we don't change. We hold on.

Personality

Patient, faithful, and hospitable, Heffalump has the long memory of beasts. He does not forget easily, whether it is good or bad. He dislikes agitation, but never compromises on what is essential.

Regard and analysis

With Heffalump, Lewis contrasts two ways of enduring a crisis. Nikabrik, desperate, is ready to do anything to win, even to compromise with evil. The badger chooses faithfulness and hope. His phrase, “we hold firm,” is often quoted as a summary of the virtue of hope in the Chronicles.

Notable quotes (paraphrased)

  • The beasts, he says, do not forget and do not change. He remembers Old Narnia and always waits for the return of the kings.

Symbolism

Heffalump represents quiet faithfulness, the kind that does not need proof. He contrasts with Nikabrik, who has been made bitter by suffering and is ready to do anything, even to recall the White Witch.

The story

Prince Caspian

When Prince Caspian, in flight, falls from his horse and loses consciousness, he wakes up in the burrow of Heffalump. The two dwarfs present disagree on his fate : Nikabrik wants to kill the young Telmarin, Puddleglum hesitates. The badger, however, immediately decides : Narnia must be ruled by a Son of Adam, and this boy could well be the awaited king. He introduces Caspian to the other hidden creatures and helps him gather the Old Narnians. Later, besieged at Aslan’s How and with no news of reinforcements, the leaders are divided. Nikabrik proposes to summon a hag and a werewolf to resurrect the White Witch. Heffalump flatly refuses : he prefers to wait for Aslan, even if He does not come. The Pevensie children arrive in time to support him.

The Last Battle

He is found again among old friends in the land of Aslan.
