En bref
Mr. and Mrs. Beaver live in a house built on their dam, in the middle of a frozen river. They are modest, funny, sometimes grumpy, and of unwavering loyalty. It is at their house that the children first hear the name of Aslan, and the name makes each of them shiver in their own way.
« Of course he isn’t safe. But he is good. He is the King, I tell you. »
Of course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.
— Mr. Beaver, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, ch. 8
Relations
- Mr. Beaver , a friend of the couple and the first victim of the Witch in the book.
- The Pevensies , whom they protect as if they were their own children.
- Aslan , whom they have learned to await, and of whom Mr. Beaver speaks with a reverent fear.
Look and analysis
The Beavers embody the virtue of home : a warm house, a shared meal, loyalty without question. Their very British humor lightens the tension of the book. Mr. Beaver’s line about Aslan, “not safe, but good,” has become one of the most quoted in The Chronicles of Narnia : it sums up the idea that true good is not bland or tame.

Their story
After Tumnus is arrested, Mr. Beaver guides the children to his home using the handkerchief that Lucy had given the faun. Over a dinner of trout, he tells them the prophecies : when two Sons of Adam and two Daughters of Eve occupy the four thrones of Cair Paravel, the Witch’s reign will end. He also tells them that “Aslan is on the move.” When Edmund slips away to join the White Witch, Mr. Beaver immediately understands the betrayal. The couple organizes the escape of the other three. Mrs. Beaver insists on taking supplies with them (and regrets bringing her sewing machine). They meet Father Christmas along the way and reach Aslan at the Stone Table. After the victory, the couple returns to the dam, which the kings and queens will help to enrich.
