Le lieu

Mr. Beaver guides the children to his dam, built on a frozen river. The house is a simple and cozy interior. They eat freshly caught fish, potatoes, and marmalade roll at a table where Mrs. Beaver has her sewing machine.

It is here that Mr. Beaver tells the prophecies and explains who Aslan is. It is also here that Edmund slips away to join the Witch. The Beavers and the three children barely escape with some provisions.

The old site indicates that the dam is still mentioned in The Horse and His Boy and Prince Caspian, as a landmark of the Narnian landscape.

The dam, built across a small river, is a fine structure. The house leaning against it is tiny and cozy. There are hams hanging from the ceiling, a sewing machine, and a smell of frying. This is the children’s first safe haven in Narnia. It is also where hope is born when the name of Aslan is spoken.

  • Mrs. Beaver wants to bring her sewing machine with her in the escape, which adds a touch of humor at the most tense moment.
  • In the 2005 film, the dam is frozen and breaks under the footsteps of the fugitives being pursued by wolves ; this is a film invention.
  • Lewis says the dam was "not quite finished" because a beaver always finds something to add to it.
