During creation, Aslan chose pairs of animals from each species. He breathed on them and told them to be talking, thinking, and loving Narnians. These beasts become larger than their silent counterparts, except for a few (the small ones become larger, the large ones smaller). They speak, reason, and have rights. Aslan warned them : if they behave badly, they could become silent beasts again. This is what happens to the Cat in The Last Battle. Humans, sons of Adam and daughters of Eve, are called to rule over them with justice, not to exploit them. Talking beasts appear in every book : beavers, badgers, mice, horses, bears, birds, and many others. Under the Telmarines, they must hide, and most humans end up doubting that they ever existed.
Aslan created them in great numbers, choosing pairs from each species, and gave them speech, reason, and joy. Often larger than ordinary beasts, they form Narnian society. They are citizens, not subjects to be hunted.
The central people of Narnia are : - Aslan - Reepicheep - Mr Tumnus - Peter - Susan - Edmund - Lucy - Shift - Puzzle - Digory Kirke - Polly Plummer - Caspian - The White Witch

Talking animals
Speaking Animals — Called by Aslan at the creation of the world, they form part of a whole mythological universe that C.S. Lewis was passionate about. The Speaking Animals resemble normal animals in appearance, but they think and speak like humans : they are therefore superior to normal animals, which do not speak. However, power is reserved for the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve (humans).
