Le lieu
At the end of The Last Battle, Aslan tells the children that there has been a railway accident : they are dead, and for them, school is over. The holiday begins. He calls the world they have left the "Shadowlands," a mere reflection of the reality they are now discovering.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)
The idea comes from Plato : the visible things are shadows of the eternal realities. It also has a Christian color : earthly life is the title and cover of a story whose true chapters are now beginning.
The word Shadowlands also gave its title to the film by Richard Attenborough (1993) about the life of Lewis and Joy Davidman, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.
"Shadowlands" is the name Aslan gives to our world, and to old Narnia, in light of eternal reality. Everything that was good there was only a copy, a shadow of the real thing.
La Dernière Bataille — Aslan annonce aux enfants que l’école est finie et que les vacances commencent : ils ont quitté le Pays des Ombres.

Shadowlands
Our planet, the world of Narnia, and the other worlds are considered shadowlands. When these worlds come to an end and are destroyed, they discover a single real world that is very like it, but deeper, more wonderful and more real. In this world, Aslan (who has taken on another form) reigns forever.
“And as he spoke, he no longer seemed to them like a lion. But then they noticed that his paws were bigger and stronger, his coat brighter, his eyes fiercer, the lines on his face more gracious. And beyond this, the things they were now encountering were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them. This is the end of all the stories, and we can indeed say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them, it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia were only the cover and the title page. Now at last they were beginning the first chapter of the Great Story which no one on earth has ever read : which is happening now and will go on for ever and ever. And the quality of this story was different from all the others. It was more serious, more beautiful, and more continually growing in meaning and beauty.” (p.217)
