The Bell and the Hammer of Charn

Digory strikes the bell despite Polly, whom he pushes aside. The sound grows louder instead of fading, until it shakes the palace : Jadis awakens from her enchantment.

Jadis had cast the spell that kept her asleep until the bell was rung.

A small golden bell and its hammer are placed on a pillar in the Hall of Images. An inscription reads, in essence : "Ring the bell and step into danger, or you will always wonder what might have happened." The sound of the bell awakens the White Witch and causes the Hall of Images to collapse.

The arrival of evil in Narnia is triggered by the actions of Jadis, the White Witch, in The Magician’s Nephew.
