Le lieu
Charn is a vast city of stone, under a red and weary sun. The children find empty courtyards, ruined palaces, and absolute silence : no living being remains. In the hall of images, hundreds of kings and queens sit motionless. Their faces, at first kind and wise, become increasingly cruel along the row.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)
At the center of the hall, a golden bell on a pillar bears an inscription : one must ring the bell and face the danger, or wonder for the rest of their life what would have happened. Digory rings it despite Polly, and Jadis awakens. She recounts the war that pitted her against her sister. Rather than lose, she spoke the Deplorable Word, which killed all life except her own.
The former site mentioned other cities of this world, Bramandin, Felinda, and Sorlois, which Jadis recalls with pride. After the children leave, the palace collapses. Aslan later says that Charn no longer exists and warns humans that our world could meet the same fate if it allows itself to be ruled by tyrants.
Charn was the capital of a vast empire, ruled by a long dynasty of kings and queens. The statues in the Hall of Images show how their faces became increasingly cruel. After a civil war, the White Witch chose to destroy all life rather than let her sister win.

Charn
The city, capital of the world to which it belongs, is now a ruined city. It has a long history with a thousand twists. Its troubled past is largely due to Queen Jadis and her spells. Much older than ours, this world will be abandoned by its sovereign.
