The Deplorable Word is a terrible secret known to the great kings of Charn. They had sworn never to learn it nor to speak it. Shift learned it in secret, at a terrible cost.

The Deplorable Word is a secret word known to the great kings of Charn. They had sworn never to use it. When spoken according to the proper ritual, it kills all living things in a world except the one who speaks it. Long ago, Jadis learned it and used it to win the war against her sister.
