Le lieu

On their way to Cair Paravel, Jill, Eustace, and Puddleglum cross the Shribble River, which marks the border of Narnia. They then ascend into the Ettin Lands, a vast and windswept moor under a low sky. At the edge of a gorge, giants are engaged in a foolish game of throwing stones, and the travelers pass by trembling.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)

The plateau stretches for days of travel, through cold and rain. It leads them toward the mountains, the ruined city of the giants, and the Harfang castle.

In the tradition of Narnia, the "ettins" are giants. The name comes from Old English eoten (giant). Peter had waged a victorious war against them in the Age of Gold.

To the north of the Shribble River lie the Ettin Moors : a bare, windswept plateau cut by ravines. Foolish and brutal giants dwell there. Further north are the ruined city and Harfang.

Le Cheval et son écuyer — Peter mène une campagne contre les géants de cette frontière.

Le Fauteuil d'argent — Le trio y voit des géants jouer à se lancer des pierres. Ils y croisent la Dame à la robe verte et son chevalier silencieux.

Ettinsmoor

After the River Shribble lies the land of the giants who do not like being spoken to. The landscape is barren and desolate : it is the Wild Wastelands of the North. This bleak country will be part of the adventure of Jill, Eustace and Puddleglum in *The Silver Chair*.

Rivière Shribble

This river is located in the North, before Ettinsmoor. No bridge spans it, and it forms the boundary between Narnia and the giants.
