The Night of the Tombs

Le lieu

The Tombs are large stone constructions shaped like beehives, on the edge of the desert, across the river. The Calormenes avoid them, for they are said to be haunted by ghouls. It is the meeting place agreed upon by Shasta, Aravis, and the horses.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)

Shasta arrives alone at the Tombs at sunset and must spend the night there. Frightened by the darkness and the noises, he is reassured by a large cat that lies against his back. It also chases away the jackals that prowl. It will later be revealed that this cat was Aslan.

The passage is a moment of great solitude in the book, between the city and the desert.

The tombs are great stone barrows, partly collapsed, on the edge of the desert, facing Cair Paravel. It is said that gouls prowl there at night. The fugitives rendezvous there.

Le Cheval et son écuyer — Shasta y passe une nuit d’angoisse, réconforté par un grand chat. Il en est chassé par des chacals et sauvé par un lion, avant de retrouver ses compagnons.
