Le lieu

Bism is very far beneath the Underworld. It is a land of heat and light, where rivers of fire flow inhabited by salamanders. Living precious stones are gathered there, which can be squeezed to drink their juice.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)

The Men of Earth, such as Golg, are originally from there. The Lady of the Green Girdle had enchanted them and drawn them upward to make them her servants. Freed by her death, they dance for joy and return home through a chasm.

Golg offers the travelers to accompany him, but Rilian refuses : their mission is upward. The place remains a mystery glimpsed. The old site was called "Bism".

Bism is the Land of Deep-Truth, far beneath the Underworld. Fire flows there in rivers and living gemstones grow there like fruit. You can squeeze them to drink their juice. The Humans come from there. The Lady plucked them from Bism to make them into sullen servants.

  • The people of Bism find the Upper World as unattractive as the travelers find the Underland.
  • Golg claims that the diamonds of Bism are alive and that one can drink their juice, unlike the "dead stones" of the Upper World.
  • Bism is a place where no human hero enters : one can only glimpse it at the bottom of a chasm.

The True Deep

It is the kingdom that lies even deeper. It exists beneath the Underworld. The city of Bism is built there, and it is where the Men of Earth will dwell. In this kingdom, there are real diamonds, true gold and silver. These precious materials are found in vast quantities and can even be eaten. In this kingdom, there is the fire at the world’s center, that is to say, lava.
