Le lieu
Cair Paravel rises on a small hill at the mouth of the Great River, by the Sea of the Eastern end. It is the seat of the kings of Narnia. A prophecy says that the Witch’s tyranny will end when two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve occupy the four thrones of the castle. After the Battle of Beruna, Aslan crowns Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy there.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)
In Prince Caspian, the children find only ruins overgrown by the forest on an island, because the sea has dug a channel. They recognize the great hall and find the treasure room with their old gifts. The Telmarines had abandoned the coast out of fear of the sea. Caspian X then restores the castle, from which The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and an aging Caspian sail out to sea.
In The Last Battle, Cair Paravel falls into the hands of the Calormenes who came by sea, and Roonwit dies there. In the Country of Aslan, the heroes see it again in true Narnia, more beautiful than ever.
Cair Paravel stands at the mouth of the Great River, on a hill by the Eastern Sea. The castle is white and its great hall has an ivory ceiling. Its western door is lined with peacock feathers, and the eastern door opens onto the sea. An old prophecy states that four children of Adam and Eve will sit on its throne. After the Golden Age, the Telmarins abandon it. It becomes the capital again under Caspian X, then falls into the hands of the Calormenes at the end.

- Cair* (or *caer*) means "fortress" in Welsh, as in Caerdydd (Cardiff) ; the origin of *Paravel* remains unexplained.
- The former site had entries for Cair Paravel in six books.
- "Cair" comes from the Welsh *caer*, "fortress". For "Paravel", some readers suggest the Old French *paravail* ("inferior"). This is only a hypothesis.
- In *Prince Caspian*, Cair Paravel became an island : the sea has gained ground over the centuries.
