Le lieu

Near Harfang, on a hill, lie the remains of a city built by ancient giants, taller and wiser than those of today. In the snowstorm, the travelers see only a slippery, angular slab of stone, not recognizing it for what it is.

Ce qui s’y passe (révèle l’intrigue)

The next day, from a window of Harfang Castle, Jill realizes : the "trenches" they crossed are the enormous letters of an inscription, UNDER ME. They missed the third sign.

The words were part of a longer inscription carved by an ancient giant king, which read in essence : "Though I am under the earth, I was king of all the land." The old site called the place "Ancient Giants’ City."

On the Northern Moors lies an abandoned city of giants. Its stones are so large that travelers mistake them for hills. Beneath the snow, they do not see that the trenches where they walk are letters carved into the ground : THEY ARE UNDER ME. This is the third sign.

Le Fauteuil d'argent — Jill, Eustache et Puddlegum la traversent dans la tempête sans comprendre. Ils ne lisent l’inscription que le lendemain, depuis une fenêtre de Harfang.

Le saviez-vous ?

  • The heroes walked over the sign without seeing it : a metaphor for ordinary blindness.
  • Rilian later reveals the full text : it was the epitaph of a giant king, which essentially read, "I lie under the earth, but in my lifetime the whole earth lay beneath me." Only the words UNDER ME remain legible.
