Shift is a talking, cunning, greedy, and deceitful monkey. He exploits his "friend" Puzzle, a donkey, and disguises him as Aslan to seize power. Puzzle, naive and good, believes himself to be witless and lets himself be dominated. Aslan welcomes him at the end with kindness.

Shift the monkey manipulates, and Puzzle the donkey goes along with it.
